The Power of Words and Affirmations. A Letter To Our Patients; Past, Present, and Future.

The Power of Words and Affirmations. A Letter To Our Patients; Past, Present, and Future.

November 4, 2021

When things aren’t going the way we want, what do we say to ourself?  When we feel overwhelmed or are struggling with the moment in time we are in, do we look for someone to lift us up, or do we look within ourselves for inspiration?

A favorite quote of mine: “We are not physical beings having a spiritual experience, we are spiritual beings having a physical experience”.  (Author unknown)  Our health journey requires us to work on our mental and spiritual health.  Without intentional mindset work, our minds can easily default to negative thoughts and feelings when we are faced with challenges.  And sadly, our physical health can be limited by negative thoughts and emotions.

This is where the power of words comes in.  We are ultimately in charge of how we perceive things and respond to them.  We also get to choose what to focus on and how we plan to face our future.

Are we excitedly anticipating joy and abundance or a body that rewards us with health and pleasure?  Conversely, are we dreading what the future holds or bracing for the next bad thing?

Scientists have studied the connections between mind and body extensively and agreed that our mental health is crucial to our physical health.

“Resilient people actually resist illnesses, cope with adversity, and recover quicker because they are able to maintain a positive attitude and manage their stress effectively. By managing our attitudes and stress levels, we actually control neurochemical transmissions in the body. The power of a healthy attitude, therefore, cannot be underestimated in the body-mind connection.” Stated in a 2012 article in Psychology Today.

One strategy to take control of our mental wellbeing is through words of affirmations.  Self help books are full of positive statements and personal affirmations that others can use for themselves.  And while stating these affirmations to ourselves or out loud may seem super awkward at first, we can fake it till we believe the statements and physically re-wire our brains.

Not only are we impacting our brain health, we are creating a domino of chemical events in our body that have physical effects such as the reduction in cortisol release when we get our mindset into a relaxed and positive state.

My recommendation to YOU is to read the following list of positive affirmations and pick one to three that you can take for yourself.  Repeat them 3 times and even write them down to review later today or tomorrow.  Something so simple can have a lasting and dramatic effect on our mental and physical health.  Here are a few affirmations to choose from.

  • I give myself permission to do what is right for me.

  • I make a difference in the world simply by existing in it.

  • I give myself space to grow and learn.

  • I am superior to negative thoughts and low actions.

  • I possess the qualities needed to be extremely successful.

  • My body is amazing and is meant to heal.

  • My ability to conquer my challenges is limitless; my potential to succeed is infinite.

  • My future is an ideal projection of what I envision now.

  • I don’t sweat the small stuff.

  • I am enough.

  • I have the power to create change.

  • I deserve the best and I accept the best now.

  • I refuse to give up because I haven’t tried all possible ways.

  • I am becoming closer to my true self every day.

  • I am at peace with who I am as a person.

  • I share my talents with the world by [fill in the blank].

If you have never read a positive affirmation, I challenge you to just do it!  Rewiring our mind to be a happier and more positive version of ourself is totally possible.  Others around you will sense the change, even if they cannot put their finger on it.

Here’s to our spiritual, mental, and physical health!
